Kenyan man set to be extradited to the U.S. Over Fatal Drunk-Driving Conviction

After nearly 13 years on the run, Kenyan fugitive Sancho Kibutu has been arrested in Runda, Nairobi, and is now facing extradition proceedings at the Milimani Law Courts. Kibutu is wanted in the United States after being convicted of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated under Section 191.5(a) of the California Penal Code. According to the extradition request, he failed to appear before a California court for sentencing in October 2013 after leaving the United States. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has opposed his release, arguing that he remains a flight risk because he previously failed to attend court proceedings. The court declined to grant him bond or cash bail and ordered that he be held at Gigiri Police Station pending further directions. The case is scheduled for mention on September 15, 2026.
