744 animals, including dogs, cats and donkeys, have been vaccinated against rabies in Nakuru, as veterinary practitioners call for increased government support to eliminate the deadly disease by 2030. Speaking during the exercise that was held at Bahati, the Africa Veterinary Technicians Association president, Dr Benson Ameda, called for increased government funding towards anti-rabies vaccination drives, to manage a public health crisis arising from zoonotic diseases. Ameda also made an appeal for the hiring of more vet officers by county governments, and to increase awareness. The Ministry of Health has listed rabies as a top priority zoonotic disease, where 99% of cases are caused by bites or scratches from infected domestic dogs.
