This Woman Spent 14 Years Chasing Titles, Then One Day She Left It All Behind to Live in the Bush

When I first heard Nancy’s story, I was curious about what would make someone walk away from a career they had spent so many years building, move to the bush with their family and start a completely different life. But after spending time with her at Lemon Valley in Elementaita, I realised there was so much more to her story than that decision. We had a really interesting conversation about marriage, motherhood, adoption, homeschooling and why she believes we need to rethink some of the things we teach our children about education and success. I was particularly interested in her views on how we raise the next generation and whether we are equipping them with the knowledge and skills they actually need to navigate life. We also explored our relationship with land, the importance of understanding and making better use of our natural resources, and why we need to have more conversations about food, farming and sustainability, especially here in Africa. What I loved most was listening to Nancy reflect on her own life, the decisions she has made, the things that didn’t work out and how her understanding of what really matters has changed as she has grown older. There is so much to learn from her experiences, whether you’re interested in farming, raising a family, starting something new or simply questioning some of the expectations we grow up with.
