Candidate Skills & Qualities

Working under the guidance and supervision of the Estate Manager, the Carpenter is skilled with knowledge of various carpentry techniques. He/she performs skilled maintenance, repair and construction of wood structures, furniture, and facilities within the school, ensuring a safe and functional environment. On a day to day basis, the carpenter works under the supervision of the Head of Grounds on grounds maintenance duties.

Job Purpose

To ensure the School buildings and grounds are maintained to the highest standards. This includes:

  • Keep the children’s playground, car parks and walkways safe, clean, tidy and clear from litter.
  • Repair and maintain school buildings, furniture, cabinetry, fixtures, partitions, and wooden structures.
  • Provide teaching resource wood work requirements and be available for school events.
  • Ensure all carpentry work meets safety regulations (including OSH).
  • Safely operate hand and power tools and maintain carpentry equipment.
  • Report any faulty appliances, damaged furniture or equipment and any potential hazard to the Estate Manager.
  • To undertake, together with members of the Estates team, various maintenance tasks as required.
  • To identify parts and materials required to carry out each job and submit lists for purchasing.
  • Assist in verifying delivered purchases conform to the required standards
  • To monitor standards and ensure that any shortfalls are rectified and re-occurrence addressed.
  •  To assist with the school emergency procedures.
  • Manage carpentry stocks and provide monthly stock levels

Skills & Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a carpenter.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools (saws, drills, sanders) and reading technical drawings.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical labor, lift heavy objects, and work in various positions.
  • Understanding of safety regulations e.g OSHA.
  • Good communication, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work independently. 
  • Flexible and capable of responding to varying workloads.
  • A carpentry and joinery course will be an added advantage.
