Sugarcane farmers will elect their representatives to the Kenya Sugar Board on November 24, following the publication of the final voters’ register by the Elections Committee.
In a notice dated October 30, the committee said the register had been published on the board’s website and displayed at designated facilities to allow growers to verify their details ahead of the election.
“The public and sugar crop growers are hereby notified that the election of grower representatives to the Kenya Sugar Board will be carried out on 24th November, 2026,” the notice states.
The notice, issued under the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, was signed by Elections Committee chairperson Harun Khator.
The committee said the election would comply with the applicable laws and court orders, citing Rule 9(7) of the Procedure for Election of Grower Representatives to the Kenya Sugar Board, 2025, as the basis for publishing the register.
“The electoral process will be undertaken in compliance with the applicable governing legal framework and court orders,” the notice states.
The process began on May 12, when the committee invited applications from candidates in the respective sugar catchment areas. The application period was later extended through a notice dated August 7.
On August 20, the committee published the final list of candidates contesting the grower representative positions.
The notice also cites Section 6 of the Sugar Act, No. 11 of 2024, as the legal basis for the board’s membership and the election of grower representatives.
The election will determine who represents sugarcane farmers in board deliberations on issues affecting the industry.
The committee has not specified polling hours or individual polling stations in its October 30 notice. Growers are expected to consult official communications from the committee and use the published register to confirm their eligibility ahead of the election.
