“Hey Joy. I hope you are well. Uhm, so something has come up, and I need to make a few changes to my wedding lineup. You know how much I want an even number, so I’ve been forced to make some changes. I’m thankful that you wanted to be part of the lineup, but I have to give your place to someone else.” That was the first message.

Joy’s phone buzzed again with another message. It was still from Helen, the bride and her brother’s fiancé.

“Also, I would like it if you gave the new bridesmaid your dress since you no longer need it and we’re nearing the wedding. There’s no need to start the hassle with the dressmaker. Thank you.” Read the second message.

Joy was asleep when Helen sent the messages. She woke up groggy and found the messages. That was the first thing she read in the morning. Her mood was ruined.

Every involvement in that wedding had been a courtesy to her brother, Mitch. She had reluctantly joined the lineup because Helen had made it sound like Mitch would be offended. Then came the Ksh 16000 worth dress whose design she absolutely hated, but the bridesmaid team was there to make Helen’s dream wedding come true.

Now, part of Helen’s dream wedding wishes was to have her off the lineup, and they needed her dress too.  She stared at the message, thinking of what to type. She couldn’t find the right words, so she took a shower and headed to work. She had no appetite for breakfast.

A day and another passed, but she was yet to respond to Helen’s texts. She also dodged her phone calls. Mitch texted her to ask why Helen was complaining that she wasn’t communicating with her. Joy ignored Mitch too.

The following day, she got a call from a new number.

“Hello Joy,” said the caller.

“Hello. Who am I speaking to?” Joy asked.

“My name is Sheila. I don’t know if Mitch or Helen mentioned me, but I think there’s been some miscommunication,” she said.

“What kind of miscommunication?” Joy asked.

“I’m the wedding’s dressmaker with the rest of the lineup for a fitting, but the dressmaker said you already picked up the dress,” said Sheila.

“My dress?” Joy responded.

“Yes, the dress you were to wear,” said Sheila.

“Are you asking why I picked up my dress? The one I fully paid for?” Joy asked calmly.

“Oh, I wasn’t aware you’d already made the payment. I’m sorry Helen didn’t tell me that. So in that case, would it be okay if I refunded you the payment and then you could send it over?” Sheila asked her politely.

For the first time since Helen sent the texts, her heart softened slightly. Sheila sent the full amount plus courier charges. Joy immediately sent the dress over to her. Once it arrived, Sheila texted her, “Thank you so much, and once again, I’m sorry about the miscommunication and inconvenience.”

Helen blew up Joy’s phone in the evening. Joy still didn’t pick up her calls. Mitch called her too, but she suspected it was Helen, so she didn’t pick up.

“How could you charge my friend for the dress? That was so disrespectful. I can’t imagine you could do something like that,” Helen texted her.

Joy read the message once, then a couple dozen times. She was in disbelief.

“Are you guys serious?” Joy finally texted Mitch.

Mitch called her.

“What happened with the dress, Joy?” Mitch asked.

“Ask your wife-to-be!” Joy yelled.

“She says you charged her friend for it,” Mitch said.

“Was I not supposed to? She’s even lucky I agreed to sell her my dress,” Joy replied.

Helen joined the call once she found Mitch talking to Joy.

“Why did you ask my friend for the money? You should have talked to me,” Helen reprimanded her.

“I didn’t see that part in your message when you told me to give her my dress,” Joy said.

“I mean, if you had responded to my texts, I would have sent you at least half the amount,” Helen told her.

Joy cut the call. She was so angry that she called their mother and told her about the experience.

“I told him I don’t like that girl,” said Joy’s mother.

“Mitch is under her spell. He has refused to see the red flags,” Joy replied.

“I don’t even understand why she dropped you from the lineup, but at least this Sheila character is sensible enough to know you shouldn’t have given out your dress for free.”

“I don’t feel like I want to attend the wedding,” Joy told her mother.

“No, my darling, you must attend. This is not the right woman for your brother, but he has to come to that conclusion on his own. I doubt it will be before the wedding, but I know that day will eventually come and hopefully, the harm done won’t be too huge,” the mother said, settling the matter.
