Kenyan insurer APA Apollo Group has strengthened its regional operations after taking control of two insurance companies in Tanzania, adding to its portfolio as it pursues expansion across East Africa.
The group has completed the acquisition of majority stakes in Meticulous General Insurance Company and Metro Life Assurance Company after securing the required regulatory and legal approvals. The transactions give APA Apollo control of the two businesses, which operate in general insurance and life assurance.
The financial terms of the acquisitions have not been disclosed.
The move gives APA Apollo a stronger foothold in Tanzania’s insurance industry and provides an entry point into a wider customer market through two established local businesses. Rather than building new operations from scratch, the group can draw on the companies’ existing customer relationships, local knowledge and business networks to advance its regional ambitions.
The acquisitions also broaden the range of insurance services available within the group’s regional portfolio. General insurance covers risks such as damage to property and motor vehicles, while life assurance focuses on financial protection over longer periods. Together, the two businesses give APA Apollo access to different segments of Tanzania’s insurance market.
Meticulous General Insurance and Metro Life Assurance Chairman Protase Ishengoma said the new ownership would help the companies improve their products and services by drawing on APA Apollo’s experience, technology and technical expertise.
“Our priority remains clear, to build on the relationships and trust we have established in the Tanzanian market, while using this new partnership to enhance the quality, accessibility and range of solutions we provide,” Ishengoma said.
His remarks point to the role of the acquisition in supporting the companies’ next phase of growth, particularly through product development and improvements in customer service. However, the companies have not announced specific changes to their products or operations following the transaction.
For APA Apollo, the deal is part of a longer-term plan to build a stronger financial services business across the region.
Chief Executive Officer Risper Ohaga said the expansion into Tanzania was a major step in implementing the group’s 2026–2030 strategy, which includes growing its presence across East Africa.
“Expanding into Tanzania marks a defining milestone in our regional strategy and strengthens our long-term commitment to building a leading financial services platform across East Africa,” Ohaga said.
She said APA Apollo intended to combine its regional capabilities with local expertise to develop insurance products suited to Tanzanian customers and businesses.
The strategy reflects an expansion approach that relies on established businesses to strengthen a company’s presence in new markets. Acquisitions can provide immediate access to existing operations and customers, although the long-term benefits depend on how effectively the businesses are managed and integrated.
For APA Apollo, the opportunity lies in using its technical resources and experience to support the growth of Meticulous General Insurance and Metro Life Assurance while retaining the local relationships that underpin their operations.
Founded in 1977, APA Apollo operates in general insurance, life assurance, microinsurance, pensions and asset management. Its shareholders and international partners include Swiss Re and Hollard International.
The group’s broader range of services gives it experience across several areas of financial protection and investment management. Its regional expansion is intended to extend those capabilities beyond Kenya and strengthen its position in neighbouring markets.
The Tanzanian acquisition also comes as businesses across East Africa seek to serve customers and commercial clients whose activities extend beyond national borders. Insurers can benefit from serving companies with operations in several markets, although they must still comply with each country’s regulatory requirements and respond to differences in customer needs.
APA Apollo said the two Tanzanian companies would continue serving their existing customers after the change in ownership. They will also draw on the group’s underwriting capacity and product development expertise.
The group has not provided a detailed financial breakdown of the acquisitions or disclosed their expected contribution to earnings. Their performance will therefore depend on the companies’ ability to grow their businesses, maintain customer confidence and translate the additional resources into stronger operations.
The completion of the transactions marks a significant step in APA Apollo’s regional expansion, adding two established insurance businesses to its portfolio as it works towards its 2030 strategic goals.
