The CDSC has issued a statement regarding an article appearing in one of the local dailies headlined “ Sh400 billion charge blocking unclaimed share transfer” published on October 30th 2026.

CDSC states that the article contains in accuracies about CDSC’s fees and its role in the transfer of unclaimed shares to the Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority(UFAA).

The CDSC has clarified that its fees are regulated as prescribed in the second schedule of the Central Depositories (Regulation of Central Depositories) Rules.

The transfer fee is charged per account, not per share. Under these rules, the fee for transferring shares is KSh 200 per account, regardless of the number of shares involved.

CDSC said that transfers to UFAA are ongoing and more than 16 million shares have been transferred to UFAA’ s custody to date. Reconciliation and transfers continue every month with the support of CDSC and other market stakeholders. Further, CDSC deploys representatives to UFAA clinics countrywide to support reunification.

It is alleged that The Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA) is seeking approximately KSh400 billion to facilitate the transfer of more than two billion abandoned shares held at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) into its custody.

The challenge partly stems from the Central Depository and Settlement Corporation (CDSC), which reportedly charges KSh200 for every dormant stock account transferred.

With billions of shares and numerous dormant accounts involved, the administrative cost has become a significant obstacle to recovering these investments.
