Co-op Bank launched its three-year partnership with Water.org in 2023, targeting financing to improve access to water and sanitation services for over 110,000 people.
Co-operative Bank of Kenya has disbursed Ksh.4.39 billion in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) financing between March 2023 and August 2026, surpassing its initial Ksh.3 billion target under a partnership with Water.org.
The bank was recognised with the Leadership in Water Infrastructure and Finance Award at the Africa WaterCredits Forum 2026 held in Nairobi on October 16.
The award recognises the bank’s role in financing water enterprises, infrastructure and service providers through its Co-op A Maji product, which offers tailored financing for water supply and sanitation projects.
The financing supports the acquisition of water tanks, solar pumps, smart meters and water connections, as well as equipment such as exhausters and bowsers for individuals, micro, small and medium enterprises, and institutions.
The bank said the initiative had exceeded its original financing target, reflecting growing demand for specialised funding in the water and sanitation sector.
Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Gideon Muriuki said innovative financing was critical to expanding access to reliable water and sanitation services.
The Africa WaterCredits Forum brings together financial institutions, water utilities and development partners to promote commercial investment in water and sanitation infrastructure across Africa.
