Moving into a new home comes with an extensive to-do list: packing boxes, hiring movers, settling the deposit, and figuring out the quickest route to work. Amid the chaos of shifting furniture and unpacking kitchenware, one critical administrative task often slips through the cracks: updating your utility accounts.
If you have recently moved within Kenya, linking your phone number and email address to your new meter with Kenya Power (KPLC) is essential to avoid unnecessary expenses and administrative confusion.
The Hidden Risks of Outdated Utility Records
When you relocate without updating your contact details with Kenya Power, your phone number and email remain tethered to the meter at your old residence. This oversight typically leads to two major issues:
If your former residence uses a postpaid meter and your payment details or automated alerts are still tied to it, you risk receiving persistent payment reminders or accidentally paying bills incurred by the new tenant.
From scheduled maintenance blackouts and emergency outages to token purchase receipts and tariff adjustments, KPLC sends real-time SMS and email updates to the registered user. If your new meter is not tied to your number, you stay in the dark whenever local power issues arise.
Kenya Power has made updating account details accessible without requiring an in-person visit to a banking hall or branch office.
To update your contact information, send an email to customercare@kplc.co.ke containing the following details:
- Subject Line: Request for Contact Details Update (Meter Number)
- Account Information:
- Your full legal name as per your National ID
- A scanned copy or photo of your National ID or Passport
- The previous meter or account number you wish to delink
- The new meter or account number at your current residence
- Your active phone number and current email address
- Proof of Occupancy: A copy of your new lease agreement, tenancy letter, or title deed to confirm your residency at the new premises.
If you are on a prepaid meter, ensure you also update your records on Kenya Power’s automated platforms to keep your transaction history intact:
- USSD Code (*977#): Dial *977# on your mobile phone to register new meters, check token histories, report outages, and submit meter readings directly.
- MyPower App: Available on the Google Play Store and iOS App Store, the mobile application allows users to register multiple meters under one profile, making it easy to toggle between properties if you manage more than one account.
