Ride-hailing company Bolt has strengthened its collaboration with Nairobi City County and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to promote road safety, improve regulatory compliance and encourage responsible ride-hailing operations.

The partnership was reinforced during a joint driver safety and compliance engagement attended by motorbike and vehicle drivers, county transport officials, NTSA representatives and emergency response provider RESCUE.CO .

It also gave drivers an opportunity to discuss challenges affecting their daily operations with transport authorities.

Benjamin Sulle, Bolt Kenya's public policy manager, said cooperation between the private sector and government was important in addressing urban mobility challenges.

“Safer roads and a well-regulated ride-hailing sector require more than technology alone. They require continued collaboration between platforms, drivers and the authorities responsible for managing our transport systems," he said.

"Through engagements such as this, we are able to bring these stakeholders together, strengthen understanding of existing requirements and identify practical ways to improve safety and compliance across the sector."

During the engagement, NTSA officials outlined key road safety requirements and highlighted dangerous driving practices, including speeding, distracted driving, unsafe lane-splitting and driver fatigue.

Participating drivers pledged to observe traffic regulations and adopt safer driving practices.

Nairobi City County's Mobility Department also briefed drivers on county transport by-laws, traffic management and parking regulations. The session aimed to improve their understanding of the rules governing their operations in the city.

The engagement also covered the role of technology and emergency response services when incidents occur.

RESCUE.CO demonstrated the appropriate use of emergency assistance services, including when to activate them and how emergency situations are handled.

Drivers received guidance on Bolt's in-app safety features, including Emergency Assist, Trip Sharing, Trusted Contacts, Unsafe Area Alerts and Trip Anomaly Detection.

The session also emphasised the importance of accurate incident reporting to help Bolt's Safety team follow up on cases promptly and effectively.

The engagement highlighted the need for continued communication between ride-hailing platforms, drivers and transport authorities as Nairobi addresses road safety and traffic management challenges.

Bolt said it would continue working with relevant stakeholders on driver safety education, regulatory awareness and measures to promote responsible ride-hailing operations.

The initiative is part of the company's efforts to support safer urban mobility through driver education, technology and cooperation with transport authorities.
