In an effort to align with the Competency Based Education (CBE) pathways, Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP), Gathoni Wamuchomba, commissioned a new science laboratory at Kagema Primary and Boarding School.

The project, which is funded by the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), is set to hold a capacity of around 45 learners per session.

MP Wamuchomba pledged further support to the school, which needs various renovation works and upgrading.

“Kagema Primary School is a hybrid day and boarding school and the most populous school in Githunguri. We pledge to support this school with additional classrooms to cater for its growing enrollment. Was happy to see efforts done by parents to upgrade their facilities,” the lawmaker remarked.

Earlier this month, MP Wamuchomba commissioned another laboratory at Kihuririo Comprehensive School.

As she did a tour of the fully equipped science laboratory, the Legislator lauded the Githunguri NG-CDF Committee for undertaking the project in record time.

The new laboratory is projected to accommodate roughly 45 learners per session.

The investment comes as Kenya continues to shift from the former content-based system to CBE, which places greater emphasis on developing learners’ competencies, talents and interests.

The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) curriculum for Junior School includes Integrated Science, Agriculture and Pre-Technical Studies, among other subjects.

Grade Nine is the final year of Junior School, after which learners select one of three Senior School pathways; Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences, or Arts and Sports, based on their interests, competencies and aspirations.

The Ministry said CBE requires schools to modernise infrastructure and equipment to support the reforms. In December 2025, Principal Secretary for Basic Education Julius Bitok said the Government was upgrading school infrastructure and equipment to support pathway selection and prepare learners for careers aligned with their demonstrated skills and aspirations.

The Ministry’s 2023–2027 strategic plan also identifies science kits, mobile science resources for Junior Schools and laboratories among measures required to support hands-on learning and the implementation of CBE.
