The Speaker of the Kiambu County Assembly Charles Thong’o on Tuesday hosted a high-level European Union Political Affairs delegation, including deputy ambassadors, deputy heads of commissions and heads of programmes from member states, led by Dr Cristina Barrios, Head of Political, Press and Information Systems.

The visit sought to give the European Union officials a first-hand understanding of how the County Assembly operates, its legislative processes and planning frameworks.

During the engagement, the Assembly presented key pieces of legislation and outlined its planning priorities aimed at strengthening local governance and service delivery.

Addressing the delegates, the Speaker underscored the critical importance of safeguarding democratic rights as the country approaches the next election cycle.

“As we head into the election period, it is our collective duty to protect the democratic rights of every citizen without exception. The County Assembly remains committed to upholding the rule of law, transparency and inclusive participation so that no Kenyan feels left behind,” Thiong’o said.

He further called on the United Nations, as the global umbrella body, to deepen its involvement in supporting the implementation of democratic rights across Africa. The Speaker noted that stronger international partnership would help reinforce institutions, promote civic education and ensure free, fair and peaceful electoral processes on the continent.

Kamenu Member of the County Assembly Peter Mburu, who also chairs the Planning Committee, briefed the delegation on how the Assembly is integrating human rights considerations into urban development. He explained measures being taken to protect residential neighbourhoods from the adverse effects of high-rise construction, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to the county’s spatial plan.

Mburu highlighted ongoing efforts to balance economic growth with the rights of residents to adequate housing, clean environments and orderly development. He noted that the spatial plan serves as a guiding framework to prevent haphazard construction and ensure that new projects respect existing community structures and public amenities.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the European Union officials to engage directly with county legislators on issues of democratic governance, legislative oversight and sustainable planning. Both sides exchanged views on best practices and potential areas of collaboration to strengthen devolution and citizen-centred development in Kiambu County.

The Speaker expressed appreciation for the visit, describing it as a valuable platform for sharing experiences and reinforcing mutual commitment to democratic values. He assured the delegation of the Assembly’s readiness to continue working with international partners in advancing good governance and the protection of fundamental rights for all residents.
