Police have stepped up efforts to combat illicit alcohol, drugs and other forms of crime in Uasin Gishu County and across the North Rift, Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has said.
Lagat said security agencies were intensifying operations against individuals involved in the manufacture and distribution of illicit alcohol and bhang, warning that those found culpable would face the law.
Speaking during the launch of the Police Mosque in Eldoret, Lagat urged members of the public to work closely with security agencies by sharing information that could help prevent and combat crime.
He said police were also strengthening cooperation with communities, religious leaders and the media as part of efforts to improve security and enhance information sharing.
According to Lagat, incidents involving the use of firearms have declined, while ongoing security operations have resulted in the arrest of several suspects linked to criminal activities.
However, he said police were continuing to pursue individuals involved in the theft of mobile phones.
Lagat also raised concern over reports of increased raids and livestock theft in areas along the Turkana-West Pokot border.
He attributed some of the incidents to conflicts over resources, particularly amid prolonged drought and competition for pasture and water among communities.
The Deputy Inspector General called on religious leaders to partner with the police in promoting peace and stability, particularly ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations and the 2027 General Election.
He said strong cooperation between the police and communities was critical to building public trust, reducing suspicion and encouraging residents to share information with security agencies.
