The National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB), Bungoma, working alongside DCI officers from Webuye West, recovered the narcotics from a white Mazda CX-5, registration number KDY 338F, which was suspected to be transporting the drugs.
The detectives had laid an ambush following intelligence reports when the vehicle appeared, but the driver allegedly spotted the officers and sped off, triggering a chase.
The pursuit ended when the Mazda collided with a red TVS motorcycle, registration number KMFV 109F, killing the rider, identified as Muzungu Munialo.
The driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot, prompting detectives to search the car after traffic officers had processed the accident scene.
A subsequent search at the police station uncovered 162 bales of cannabis wrapped in yellow cellotape, with an estimated street value of 5,124,000 shillings.
Detectives also recovered an additional number plate, KF2 8588, from the vehicle's back seat, which is suspected to have been intended to conceal the vehicle's identity.
The vehicle and seized narcotics have since been handed over to NANIB Bungoma for further investigations.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has expressed condolences to Munialo's family following his death, while confirming that efforts are underway to trace the fleeing driver and establish the wider network behind the suspected drug trafficking operation.
