Murang’a County Woman Representative Betty Maina has urged political aspirants to promote peaceful campaigns and respect one another’s ambitions as the country prepares for the next general election.
Maina said all aspirants had a democratic right to seek elective positions and should be allowed to participate in free and fair party nominations without intimidation or hostility.
Speaking at Mbogoini Primary School, Kigumo Constituency, she urged politicians to respect one another’s political ambitions, noting that voters would ultimately determine who gets elected.
“Let us respect each other’s ambitions because mwananchi will have the final say on election day,” she said.
Her remarks come amid growing political activity and realignments across the country where several leaders are positioning themselves ahead of the next elections.
In Murang’a County, Maina and Lands and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome have both expressed interest in the county gubernatorial seat.
“Young people too can lead so let us respect each other’s ambitions and let mwananchi decide, some of us do not want party appointments but we are ready to go through to the party nominations as long as they will be free and fair,” she said
The woman representative also urged residents to welcome all aspirants seeking their support but challenged them to assess candidates based on their development record and ability to improve their lives.
“I urge you to welcome everyone who comes to woo you for your votes, but when election time comes, you should elect leaders who will bring development to your areas and uplift your lives.”
“There are those who made promises but failed to deliver. This is the time to separate the chaff from the wheat by evaluating what they delivered vis-a-vis what they promised and what your needs as an electorate are,” she said.
Maina further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling the development pledges contained in its election manifesto.
Meanwhile, she called on parents and guardians to remain vigilant and protect children during the school holidays.
She warned individuals against sexual abuse of minors, stressing that offenders would face the full force of the law.
“Any child below 18 years is a minor and should be protected. Those who commit sexual offences against children will go to jail. As parents, know where your children are and the people they interact with during this long school holiday.
“Let us protect the children and their future,” she said.
