A Milimani Anti-Corruption Court has released two former public officers accused of using forged academic certificates to secure employment in government institutions.
Kenneth Mwiti Kiogora, a former Second Clerk Assistant at the Kiambu County Assembly, and Daniel Mukoya Olando, a former Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) employee, were separately charged after being arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
The two were arraigned after spending a night in custody and denied the charges against them.
Mwiti is accused of forging a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificate and presenting it as a genuine document issued by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
The prosecution told the court that Mwiti allegedly used the certificate to secure employment at the Kiambu County Assembly, where he subsequently received salaries totalling Sh6,283,631.30.
The EACC alleges that the salaries amounted to fraudulent acquisition of public property.
Mwiti faces charges of fraudulent acquisition of public property, forgery, uttering a false document and deceiving a principal.
The charges followed investigations by the EACC, which forwarded the inquiry file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The DPP subsequently agreed with the commission’s recommendation to prosecute him.
Olando, meanwhile, is accused of forging a Bachelor of Commerce degree certificate in Accounting and using it to secure an appointment as Acting Fire Supervisor at the Kenya Airports Authority.
According to the EACC, Olando knowingly presented the certificate as genuine despite it allegedly being false.
He faces charges of knowingly using a false or misleading document, forgery, uttering a false document and giving false information.
The court granted Mwiti cash bail of Sh150,000 or a bond of Sh1 million with a surety of a similar amount.
Olando was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 or a Sh500,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount.
The two cases will now proceed before the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court.
