Who Is Tanzanian Activist Twaha Mwaipaya?

Twaha Salim Mwaipaya is a Tanzanian political activist and human rights defender who serves as the national youth mobilization coordinator for CHADEMA, the country’s main opposition party, through its youth wing, Baraza la Vijana la CHADEMA (BAVICHA).

Mwaipaya has been vocal in criticizing the Tanzanian government over alleged police brutality and corruption while advocating for a new constitution to replace the country’s 1977 constitutional framework.

He was previously imprisoned in Tanzania in 2022 before fleeing to Kenya in 2025, where he sought refuge and safety.

His disappearance came after he was reportedly intercepted by armed men on Sunday, October 25, 2026, while travelling in a taxi in Kamulu, Machakos County. The assailants were said to have been travelling in a convoy of three vehicles before forcibly taking him to an unknown destination.

The incident sparked concern among human rights organizations, including Amnesty International Kenya and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), which raised alarm over alleged cross-border abductions and enforced disappearances targeting East African activists and government critics.
