The Senate Standing Committee on Trade, Industrialization, and Tourism has raised concerns over the lack of a clear fiscal plan for the completion and long-term sustainability of an industrial park project in the Moi area of Sabaki Ward, Magarini Constituency.

The committee, led by its Chairperson, Kwale Senator Issa Juma Boy, on Tuesday inspected the ongoing construction works to assess the progress of the project.

Senators Enock Wambua and Okiya Omtatah accompanied Senator Boy during the visit of the project, which is estimated to be 25 per cent complete against an earlier projection that it would be completed by December 2026.

Although the committee expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far, members questioned how the remaining works would be financed and how the facility would be sustained once completed.

Senator Boy said the committee would seek clarification from the relevant authorities on the project’s financing framework and its long-term operational plan.

“We need to understand how this project will be funded to completion and how it will be sustained once it becomes operational,” said Senator Boy.

The committee is expected to compile its findings and make recommendations on the project, with the financing and sustainability plan likely to form part of its report.

The Senate is currently in Kilifi in what is termed as Senate Mashinani, and different committees have been traversing the county to verify projects cited in the Auditor General’s Report.

It has also been holding plenary sessions at the County Assembly of Kilifi led by Speaker Amason Kingi.
