Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has announced musician and businessman KRG The Don as his candidate for the Nairobi County Senate seat ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement on September 23, Sonko said KRG, whose real name is Karuga Kimani, will pursue the seat through the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), adding politics to a career spanning music, entertainment, and business.
“Today, I held fruitful discussions with Hon.William Karuga Kimani, popularly known as KRG, who will be seeking the Nairobi County Senate seat on our NEDP ticket,” said Sonko.
The musician has built a name in Kenya’s entertainment industry over the years while also pursuing businesses in different sectors.
Before becoming a recognized entertainer, KRG worked in different jobs and has previously spoken about his experience as a mechanic.
KRG The Don’s Age and Education
KRG The Don was born on January 14, 1991, and is 35 years old in 2026.
He began his education in Uganda before later joining Kampala International University, where he enrolled to study Information Technology.
However, KRG did not complete the course. He left university during his first semester and decided to concentrate on business and entrepreneurship.
His interest in making money developed at a young age, and KRG has previously spoken about some of the small businesses he pursued while growing up.
He said he was already looking for business opportunities in school and gradually expanded his ventures as he got older.
From Mechanic to Musician
Before establishing himself as a musician, KRG tried his hand at several jobs and businesses.
In a 2022 interview, KRG recalled working around Maasai Mara, where he repaired punctures and worked on vehicle tires, including those fitted on Land Rovers.
“This must be the worst job ever, repairing a puncture on a Land Rover,” he said.
He later ventured into the pool-table business in Donholm, Nairobi. KRG has said the business generated significant daily income before he eventually sold it and moved into other ventures.
Music Career
KRG The Don began pursuing music at a young age and eventually established himself as a musician and deejay.
His music is associated with dancehall and hip-hop, and the has released songs and worked with several names in Kenya’s entertainment industry.
Some of the songs associated with KRG include “Mathogothanio,” “We Run This,” “Body Fine,” “Kairetu” and “Nyandus.”
He has also collaborated with artistes including Boondocks Gang, Magix Enga, Khaligraph Jones and Sailors, among others.
KRG also founded Fast Cash Music, which gave him a role on the business side of music.
KRG The Don Business Ventures
Alongside music, KRG The Don has pursued various business interests, including real estate, transport, construction, car sales and hospitality.
One of his best-known investments is Casavera Lounge, also known as Casa Vera, located along Ngong Road in the Kilimani area of Nairobi.
KRG has publicly claimed ownership of the nightclub, saying he invested about KSh200 million to acquire the land and develop the property.
In early February 2024, KRG announced the temporary closure of Casavera Lounge.
KRG has also spoken publicly about his broader business interests and investments across sectors.
KRG has also previously said that he made his first million at the age of 17 and has attributed part of his financial background to an inheritance from his grandparents.
“I am approaching KSh 5 billion. There is money in this world. I made my first million in 2008 when I was 17,” stated KRG.
