Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has explained how a new digital platform will allow Kenyans living abroad to invest in Kenya and track their contributions.

Addressing the media on September 24, Mudavadi said the Kenya Diaspora Impact Platform (KDIP) was launched during President William Ruto’s engagement with Kenyans in the diaspora ahead of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The platform will serve as a government-led digital platform for diaspora engagements under the State Department for Diaspora Affairs.

Through KDIP, Kenyans abroad will be able to fund verified county projects, invest in Kenya, support enterprises, volunteer their skills and start businesses using a single e-Citizen identity.

“During the President’s engagement with the diaspora, the Kenya Diaspora Impact Platform (KDIP) was launched as Kenya’s new government-led digital platform for all diaspora engagements.

The platform will operate under the State Department for Diaspora Affairs and enable Kenyans abroad to fund verified county projects, invest in Kenya, support enterprises, volunteer their skills,” he said.

Mudavadi Reveals How Kenyans Abroad Can Invest in Government Projects

According to Mudavadi, the platform will also feature a public dashboard that will allow users to see their investments and monitor how their contributions are used.

Mudavadi said the system addresses the lack of visibility that Kenyans in the diaspora previously faced when investing in projects in the country.

“A Kenyan in the diaspora will now be able to have visibility on what they’re investing in,” Mudavadi said.

The platform is part of government efforts to strengthen engagement with Kenyans living abroad and provide them with a direct channel to participate in development and investment opportunities in Kenya.

What Ruto Said During the Launch

President Ruto on September 20, said the government was seeking to create credible pathways through which these resources could be connected more systematically to opportunities and development projects in Kenya.

The launch was also accompanied by the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent between the United Nations in Kenya and Equity Group Holdings to collaborate on the development of the platform.

The initiative comes as Kenya seeks to create more structured ways for its diaspora to contribute to the country’s development. Kenyans living abroad are already a major source of foreign exchange, with formal remittance inflows reaching approximately US$5.04 billion in 2025, according to the Central Bank of Kenya.

Beyond financial contributions, the diaspora also brings professional expertise, business experience, technology, investment capital and international networks that connect Kenya to markets and institutions around the world.

The platform is expected to cover a range of areas, including community development projects, funding for micro, small and medium enterprises, business growth, philanthropy, and the sharing of skills and expertise.

The initiative is intended to broaden diaspora engagement beyond sending money home by creating more opportunities to contribute to Kenya’s development.
