The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has released a list of recognized engineering degree programmes, adding that only graduates from accredited programmes will be eligible for registration as engineers in the country.

In a notice dated March 17, EBK said the accreditation process aims to ensure that engineering graduates possess the competencies required to meet national development needs and compete globally in the profession.

“The Board wishes to bring to the attention of the public the following recognized local engineering programmes. The Board shall only register persons who have pursued courses that are duly recognized by the Board,” read part of the notice.

Under Tier I engineering programmes, three universities in Kenya offer courses officially accredited to Washington Accord standards.

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology offers a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, which is accredited at the undergraduate level.

At Strathmore University, the Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering programme is also accredited at the undergraduate level.

Meanwhile, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology offers an accredited Bachelor of Science in Mechatronics Engineering at the undergraduate level.

The Multimedia University of Kenya offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical & Telecommunications Engineering, and Civil Engineering.

At Murang’a University of Technology, undergraduate programmes include Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Mechatronics Engineering.

Machakos University provides Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

South Eastern Kenya University offers Agricultural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Electrical & Electronics Engineering at the undergraduate level.

Strathmore University runs an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.

At Taita Taveta University, recognised programmes include Mining & Mineral Processing Engineering and Civil Engineering.

University of Embu offers an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, while Chuka University provides a Bachelor of Science in Electrical & Electronics Engineering.

About the Engineering Board

EBK, a statutory body established under the Engineers Act, 2011, is mandated to develop and regulate engineering practice in Kenya.

The Board noted that maintaining high standards in engineering education is essential to support infrastructure development under the government’s Kenya Vision 2030 blueprint.

As part of its mandate, the Board evaluates both local and foreign engineering programmes to determine whether they meet the standards required for professional recognition.
