President William Ruto has announced plans to allocate Ksh1.2 billion for the construction of a new university in Emurua Dikirr, Narok County, in honour of the late area Member of Parliament Johana Ng’eno.
Ruto made the announcement on Wednesday, August 26, while addressing residents during his development tour of Narok County. He said the funding had been set aside after residents requested the establishment of a university in the area.
The President said the proposed institution would serve students from Emurua Dikirr, the wider Narok County and other parts of the country.
“You asked me for the construction of a university here at Emurua Dikirr; I have today brought you Ksh1.2 billion for the construction of a new university that will be in honour of the late Johana Ng’eno,” Ruto announced.
“The university will help the children from this area, Narok and the rest of Narok.”
Ruto Announces New University in Emurua Dikirr to Honour Johana Ng’eno
The university will be named after Ng’eno, who served as the MP for Emurua Dikirr before his death in a helicopter crash in Nandi County in February 2026.
Ng’eno was among six people who died when the helicopter crashed in the Mosop area of Nandi County on February 28.
Ruto had previously pledged government support to establish a university campus in Emurua Dikirr in memory of Ng’eno. In March, the President announced support for a Maasai Mara University campus in the area during the late MP’s funeral.
The government later earmarked Ksh750 million through the Ministry of Education for the proposed Johana Ng’eno University campus at Maasai Mara University. The institution was expected to be established in Ololmasani Ward.
The county government had committed to provide 100 acres of land for the proposed institution.
The latest KSh1.2 billion announcement therefore represents an increase from the earlier funding figure announced for the project.
Ksh180 Million for Student Hostels
Ruto also announced KSh180 million for the construction of student hostels at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Emurua Dikirr.
He said the funds would support the construction of student accommodation facilities as the government expands education infrastructure in the area.
“Today I am going to launch the construction of hostels for our young people. We have given them Ksh180 million to do that work,” he added.
The additional investment is expected to address accommodation needs as more students gain access to higher education and training institutions in the constituency.
New Road Project for Emurua Dikirr
The President also announced plans for a major road project linking Emurua Dikirr to the Rironi-Mau Summit corridor.
The government plans to upgrade the existing road to a Class B road, with Ruto saying construction was expected to begin in October.
The road project is expected to improve connectivity between Emurua Dikirr and other parts of Narok and ease movement of people and goods.
Ruto linked the education and infrastructure projects to efforts to expand employment opportunities and stimulate economic activity in the region.
The proposed university, student hostels and road project form part of a wider package of development commitments announced during the President’s tour of Narok County.
