Study Reveals Courses That Produce Most Billionaires

A study of 3,184 billionaires has identified the academic fields most commonly associated with extreme wealth, showing a strong concentration in a few key courses linked to business and decision-making.

According to the analysis, Business and Economics is the leading academic pathway, accounting for 35.11% (1,118 billionaires).

Business Administration leads this category at 11.21%, followed by Economics at 6.39%, and Finance at 4.42%, collectively forming a strong pathway into high-level financial and corporate decision-making.

Engineering and Business Dominate the List of Courses That Produce Billionaires

Engineering comes in second at 13.63% of 434 billionaires, with mechanical and electrical engineering being the most common specializations.

However, the pattern shows that technical expertise alone is often not enough. Many individuals transition into business roles later in their careers, and around 1 in 8 engineering billionaires also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

This indicates that combining engineering knowledge with business education significantly improves wealth-building potential.

List of Other Courses That Produce Billionaires Courses

Beyond the top two categories, other courses contribute smaller and less consistent shares.

Natural sciences produce 6.09%, humanities 6.03%, law 4.81%, computer science 4.30%, and social sciences 4.21%, according to the rankings.

Although these fields produce successful individuals, the study notes that they do not show the same concentration of billionaire outcomes as business-related disciplines do.

At the lower end, the medicine course, despite being highly marketed, produces 2.35% billionaires, while arts and design produce 1.19% billionaires.

In addition, the study reveals that education accounts for about 0.75%, a relatively small share of billionaire backgrounds.

Further, agriculture produces the fewest at about 0.31%, and military studies, at 0.13%, which rarely appear in the dataset.

Universities Producing the Most Billionaires Around the World

A global ranking of universities that have produced the most highlights a strong concentration of elite institutions, with U.S. universities dominating the list.

Harvard University ranks first with 134, making it the leading institution associated with global wealth creation.

It is followed by Stanford University with 86 and the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) with 63.
