The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) has appointed Dr Paul Machocho Wanyeki as its new Director General and Chief Executive Officer.
TVETA announced the appointment on Wednesday, October 21, 2026 saying Wanyeki brings more than 15 years of experience in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) regulation, policy development, quality assurance, institutional leadership and skills development.
“The Board of Directors of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Paul Machocho Wanyeki as the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Authority,” TVETA said.
TVETA Board Chairperson Prof. Kellen Kiambati welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence in Wanyeki’s ability to advance the authority’s strategic priorities.
Kiambati said his experience and understanding of the TVET sector would help strengthen the quality, relevance and credibility of technical and vocational training in Kenya.
Wanyeki previously held senior leadership positions at TVETA.
He previously served as Acting Director of Standards Development, Compliance and Enforcement, where he contributed to strengthening regulatory and quality assurance systems and advancing national TVET reforms.
He also served at Dedan Kimathi University of Technology and worked as a trainer at Kisiwa National Polytechnic.
The appointment comes as the country continues to prioritise skills development to support employment, industry needs and economic growth.
TVETA regulates and oversees technical and vocational education and training institutions in Kenya, including matters relating to institutional standards, compliance and quality assurance.
The board also recognized Timothy Nyongesa Katiambo for his service and leadership while serving as Acting Director General.
Wanyeki will lead TVETA’s management and staff in carrying out the authority’s mandate and supporting the government’s skills development and economic transformation agenda.
The announcement comes after the Employment and Labour Relations Court issued orders halting Wanyeki’s appointment in August amid a legal dispute over the recruitment process.
Justice Monica Mbaru had barred Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba from gazetting the appointment, pending the hearing of a petition challenging the process, which was scheduled for September.
Josiah Moriasi, CEO of the Youth Fund, topped the interviews with a score of 84.9 per cent, followed by Wanyeki at 80.4 per cent. Leah Kaburu, CEO of the Sports Disputes Tribunal, came third with 78.9 per cent.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba had recommended Moriasi for the position, while Head of Public Service Felix Koskei backed Wanyeki.
The petitioner argued that an executive circular requiring the Head of Public Service to approve chief executive appointments conflicts with the recruitment procedure set out in the TVET Act.
