The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has published a list of institutions licensed to offer law programmes in Kenya.

In a notice published on July 7, CLE stated that only the listed institutions are authorized to offer Master of Laws (LL.M.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Diploma in Law programmes in Kenya.

“Under the provisions of Sections of the Legal Education Laws of Kenya, the following are the ONLY licensed Legal Education Providers and Legal Education Programmes in Kenya as indicated under each respective cluster,” read part of the notice.

The regulator urged prospective students and members of the public to verify the licensing status of legal education providers before enrolling, noting that only institutions and programmes licensed by the Council are recognized under Kenyan law.

Institutions with Pending Licensing Applications

The Council further disclosed that applications from nine institutions seeking new licences or licence renewals remain under consideration.

CLE Names Universities Approved to Offer Law Courses in Kenya

According to CLE, four institutions are licensed to offer the Master of Laws (LL.M.) programme.

These include Kenyatta University, Strathmore University, Catholic University of Eastern Africa and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

The Council also listed 16 institutions licensed to offer the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) programme.

They Include Umma University, Chuka University, Tharaka University, Zetech University, Tom Mboya University, Daystar University, the University of Embu, Kisii University, Mount Kenya University, Riara University, Kenyatta University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Strathmore University, Maseno University and South Eastern Kenya University.

For the Diploma in Law programme, the licensed institutions are Mount Kenya University, Kisii University, Kenya School of Law and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
