A Sergeant Major in the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) is a leadership rank given to a serviceman or woman who has attained the rank of Warrant Officer Class One (WO1).
Sergeant Majors are the most senior enlisted service personnel in the Kenya Defence Forces and serve as advisers to commanders on matters affecting soldiers.
At the top of the hierarchy is the Defence Forces Sergeant Major (DFSM), the highest position among enlisted service members.
The DFSM advises the Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF) on the welfare of soldiers and their families and oversees discipline and drills across the various cadres.
A Sergeant Major holding the rank of WO1, often serving as a Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) or DFSM, helps maintain military discipline, uphold unit traditions, mentor junior personnel, and strengthen communication between troops and commanders.
Roles They Play in the KDF
Sergeants Major also help enforce military discipline, codes of conduct, and standards of appearance and dress regulations within their units.
They advise commanding officers on matters affecting soldiers, including welfare, morale, discipline and operational readiness.
Also among the roles assigned to the Sergeants Major is to guide and mentor junior soldiers and non-commissioned officers, helping them develop professionally and maintain military standards.
In addition, they oversee drills, inspections, parades, and ceremonial activities, ensuring personnel maintain the required military standards and protocols.
They also serve as a link between commanders and enlisted personnel by communicating leadership directives to lower ranks while raising soldiers’ concerns with commanders.
Meet the Current KDF Service Sergeant Majors
The KDF has four senior Sergeant Major positions, with each serving as a senior enlisted leader within the military.
The positions include the Defence Forces Sergeant Major, the Kenya Army Sergeant Major, the Kenya Air Force Sergeant Major, and the Kenya Navy Sergeant Major.
WO1 Bwana Haji Omari serves as the Defence Forces Sergeant Major (DFSM), the highest position among enlisted personnel in the KDF.
WO1 Omari served as a drill instructor at the Recruit Training School between 1992 and 1997.
He later served aboard several Kenya Navy ships as a gunner before moving to Kenya Navy Base Manda, where he taught junior and senior leadership courses.
WO1 Joel Gatibi Murage, on his part, is the Kenya Army Sergeant Major. He completed his basic military training at the Recruits Training School before being posted to the 3rd Battalion, Kenya Rifles.
He has held several appointments within the KDF, particularly in the Infantry Corps. In 2001, he was selected to serve with the sixth Kenyan battalion deployed on a peacekeeping mission in Sierra Leone.
WO1 Murage rose through the ranks and was promoted to Warrant Officer Class One on September 1, 2020.
He also served as Regimental Sergeant Major at the Field Intelligence Battalion and later as Eastern Command Sergeant Major at Embakasi Garrison before taking up his current position.
WO1 Franco Leparsalaach serves as the Kenya Air Force Sergeant Major. He began as an Under Training Technician at Laikipia Air Base, then specialized in aircraft avionics and later qualified as a Radio Technician Class One.
In 2009, WO1 Leparsalaach was selected to undertake an F-5 aircraft technician course in Jordan, where he specialized in the aircraft’s Head-Up Weapon Aiming Computerized System.
WO1 Musa Adan Abdi serves as the Kenya Navy Sergeant Major. He completed his basic military training at the Recruits Training School in Eldoret before specializing in seamanship and gun operation at the Naval Training School, now known as the Kenya Naval Training College.
Throughout his career, WO1 Abdi has held various positions within the Kenya Navy. In 1991, he was assigned to Kenya Navy Ship Nyayo, where he participated in Exercise Refugee Influx.
