NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 29 – The Field Marshall Muthoni Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) Market in Nyeri Town Constituency is part of a wider development transformation that is reshaping infrastructure, livelihoods, business opportunities and skills development for residents.
Dorcas Kathambi Kang’ethe, the project Clerk of Works, said the market is among several government projects being implemented in Nyeri to improve the living and working environment for local communities.
She noted that residents are benefiting from a range of development investments, including modern markets, affordable housing projects, Ruring’u Stadium, a polytechnic and improvements at the Provincial General Hospital (PGH).
“These projects are improving the livelihoods of the neighbours and the community,” Kang’ethe said, adding that the developments are also creating opportunities for young people to acquire practical skills.
She said the Field Marshall Muthoni Market is providing a platform where young professionals and trainees can gain hands-on experience in construction and related fields.
The project currently has seven interns who have been gaining practical exposure while working alongside professionals at the construction site.
Kang’ethe said the interns have demonstrated significant improvement since joining the project, with some developing new interests in construction as a result of the practical experience they have gained.
“I can see the difference between the day they came in and today. They have improved and learnt something new. Some have even changed their courses and started doing construction,” she said.
Speaking during a development inspection in his constituency, Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge highlighted that the various projects being implemented within the constituency are expected to create an interconnected economic ecosystem that will support businesses and provide opportunities for young people.
Mathenge said the completion of Ruring’u Stadium and the affordable housing project would further strengthen the emerging ecosystem by bringing together sports, housing, education, technology and commercial activities.
“You will find that the completion of the Ruring’u Stadium and the affordable housing project will introduce a completely new ecosystem supporting business and supporting young people in this constituency,” Mathenge said.
He noted that the development of the sports centre, ICT hub, affordable housing project and a primary school in close proximity would create an environment capable of supporting local enterprise.
“We have an excellent sports centre, next door we have an ICT hub, next door we have an affordable housing project and a primary school. A completely new, virtually self-sustaining business enterprise will emerge,” he said.
The emerging development cluster is expected to generate demand for goods and services while creating opportunities for traders, entrepreneurs, young people and other local residents.
The Field Marshall Muthoni Market will therefore complement the broader investments by providing modern trading facilities while supporting the growth of businesses around the surrounding developments.
Kang’ethe said the impact of the projects extends beyond the physical infrastructure, with employment, skills transfer and improved livelihoods emerging as important benefits to the local community.
She said the experience gained by the seven interns at the market demonstrates how government projects can also contribute to developing a skilled workforce by exposing young people to practical construction work.
The combination of markets, housing, sports facilities, ICT infrastructure, education and health investments is gradually creating a more integrated development environment in Nyeri Town Constituency.
The projects are expected to strengthen local economic activity while providing residents with improved access to facilities, business opportunities and skills development.
