Health Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale has sent a stern warning to government officials and private sector players who midwifed Covid-19 fraud, declaring that the Kenya Kwanza regime has turned around to close the gap and will not allow the emergence of “Ebola millionaires”.
CS Duale, who lost his mum during the Covid-19 pandemic, now says that many wheeler-dealers have unsuccessfully tried to replicate their pandemic-era tactics
“There will be no Ebola millionaires under my leadership,” Duale says.
In 2022 queries came up after well-connected people and politicians bypassed proper procedures to secure lucrative tenders for Personal Protective Equipment and emergency supplies. Audits and parliamentary investigations revealed taxpayers lost about KSh7.8 billion to KSh17 billion, with most of the funds remaining unaccounted for or tied up in inflated contracts.
“We had our colleagues who were stealing, becoming millionaires. Don’t try coming to Afya House seeking for tenders… Just the other day I heard one say, there’s Ksh70 billion… There’s no 70 billion,” Duale warns.
