Lyne Nzisa is a Kenyan lawyer who walked away from a 21-year career in the legal and corporate sector and ventured into hospitality after years of travelling across Africa.
Today, she is the owner and proprietor of Victoria Sands Lodge and Takawiri Victoria Sands in Mbita, Homa Bay County, an investment inspired by the many hotels she experienced while working abroad.
Nzisa says she was not forced into retirement but deliberately chose to pursue a long-held dream of retiring beside the water.
Her journey from law and corporate work to hospitality was shaped by extensive travel, entrepreneurship and a carefully planned savings strategy.
Lyne Nzisa Education and Career
Magdalene Nzisa Musau Munyao studied law at the University of Nairobi and graduated in 2000. She began her professional journey as a lawyer in Nairobi, spending about six years in legal practice while also experimenting with several business ventures.
She has previously spoken about trying activities including farming, flower export, charcoal trading and running a boutique.
After her early years in legal practice, Nzisa joined the public sector and became the first deputy director of the Anti-Counterfeit Agency, where her work focused on intellectual property and the protection of genuine brands and goods.
She later moved into the corporate world, joining Diageo, where she held a regional brand-protection role. Her work covered several African markets and involved extensive international travel.
In an interview, Nzisa said she could spend a week, two weeks or even three weeks every month travelling for work. Her frequent stays in hotels eventually influenced the way she viewed hospitality.
She said she spent years observing hotel designs, room layouts, and services. She even carried notebooks in which she sketched ideas she encountered in hotels in countries such as South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
Retiring at 45 and Falling in Love With Mbita
Nzisa had planned to retire early. By her mid-20s, she had set herself a target of leaving formal employment at 45, and she began saving towards that goal as her career progressed. In 2022, Nzisa had achieved her plan and retired at 45.
Her original plan was to build a retirement home in Diani. However, an acquaintance from Homa Bay encouraged her to explore the islands and beaches around Mbita.
Nzisa visited the area in 2017 and she immediately fell in love with its scenery, clean water and fresh air.
She subsequently acquired land in Mbita and began developing Victoria Sands Lodge. Nzisa bought the property in 2019 and started construction in January 2020. COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the project soon afterward, but she pushed ahead and completed the lodge before the end of that year.
The facility sits on about five acres and has 13 rooms whose designs draw inspiration from Luo culture. It offers accommodation, a swimming pool, restaurant and bar, outdoor games, conference facilities, boat rides, excursions and wedding services.
Building Victoria Sands and Expanding to Takawiri
Nzisa says her approach has been to prioritise quality rather than build a large number of rooms. The lodge targets different groups throughout the year, including couples seeking weekend getaways, families during school holidays and corporate clients looking for conference and team-building facilities.
The property also provides access to attractions around the region, including Ruma National Park, Lake Simbi Nyaima, Abundu hot springs and the rock-art sites of Mfangano Island.
Nzisa later expanded her hospitality interests to Takawiri Island, where she established Takawiri Victoria Sands.
Her investment journey has not been without challenges. Nzisa has previously described facing resistance as an outsider investing in ancestral land and said she had to undertake community social-responsibility activities to build relationships with residents around her business.
Beyond hospitality, Nzisa is also associated with the popular Facebook community Kilimani Mums, which is the founder.
