Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi’s public image has long been associated with laughter, flamboyant performances and a successful entertainment career.
Behind that image, however, lies a story of grief, financial hardship, career setbacks and a dramatic fall from fame before rebuilding his career and becoming an outspoken activist.
In an interview with journalist Jeff Koinange, Omondi opened up about some of the difficult experiences that shaped his journey, including losing his mother, struggling to raise university fees, becoming famous while broke, and eventually having his household belongings auctioned after his career suffered a major setback.
Eric Omondi Early Life and Education
Eric Otieno Omondi, who grew up in Kisumu and was the fourth-born of the late Kisumu OCS William Oduor Omondi.
He discovered his comedic talent while at Kisumu Boys High School, where he became involved in drama. He later joined Daystar University to study Mass Communication and Journalism.
In the interview, Omondi recalled that his mother had promised to take him to Nairobi to pursue communication studies at Kenya College of Communication and Technology, now Multimedia University, after completing secondary school. She died shortly before his final examinations.
His father wanted him to remain in Kisumu and take over one of the family businesses, including hotels that his mother had operated. Omondi, however, insisted on pursuing higher education.
He recalled that his university fees were about KSh127,000 per semester and that he turned to his church for help. The fundraising attracted only 8 people and raised a total of KSh8,000.
After arriving at Daystar, he could not immediately clear his fees. Despite the financial difficulties, he continued pursuing his studies and performing as an emcee at campus events.
Eric Omondi is currently dating Lynne, a Kenyan beauty model with whom they have a daughter.
From Churchill Show Breakthrough to Being Auctioned
Omondi’s breakthrough came after meeting comedian Daniel Ndambuki, popularly known as Churchill, at a Daystar event.
Churchill recognized his talent and brought him onto Churchill Live, where Omondi became one of the show’s most recognizable comedians.
The opportunity transformed his visibility. Omondi revealed that fame initially came without money. He described himself as being “extremely famous” while also being “extremely broke”.
His financial fortunes later changed. He secured emcee opportunities through Churchill’s network and recalled receiving KSh60,000 for an early major assignment. His earnings increased, and at one gig he was paid KSh1.2 million for a deal involving a billboard and television commercial.
The rapid rise also came with rapid spending, which he credits to ‘expensive Luo lifestyle ‘. Omondi purchased his car, a Toyota Bluebird, for a total of KSh 800,000, paid four months’ rent, two months’ deposit, and upgraded his lifestyle. However, when Churchill Live took a break, he moved to KTN for a separate television project. The program lasted only three episodes before being taken off air.
The failure badly affected his reputation and income. He said jobs dried up and his public image suffered as some Kenyans interpreted his departure from Churchill’s platform as arrogance or betrayal.
The downturn eventually became severe enough for auctioneers to come to his home to collect household belongings. Omondi said he subsequently stayed at a cousin’s home for about three months as he attempted to recover.
Rebuilding His Career and Becoming an Activist
Omondi eventually returned to the Churchill Show, where he remained a prominent comedian before leaving to build his own brand. His career later expanded beyond traditional stand-up comedy into television, digital entertainment, event hosting, and philanthropy. Eric left the show in 2013 to pursue his own comedy brand.
Another major personal setback came with the death of his younger brother and fellow comedian Fred Omondi in 2024. Eric has described Fred as one of the people closest to him, noting that they grew up together, moved to Nairobi together and worked in comedy together.
In recent years, Omondi has used his celebrity platform for activism. From 2023, he became vocal about the cost of living and political leadership.
His activism has also been accompanied by philanthropic work. He has organized online fundraising campaigns for Kenyans facing financial difficulties and medical challenges through Sisi kwa sisi. In November 2024, he received the Celebrity Champion of the Year award at the NGO Awards.
He was also recognized as Humanitarian of the Year by the National Council of Community-Based Organizations.

Eric Omondi’s actual net worth is not independently verified. His income comes from comedy performances, MC work, television and digital content, advertising and brand endorsements, social-media monetization, and his personal businesses.
