The 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards delivered another sign that television’s biggest awards body is moving away from the repeat winners that once defined the ceremony, with voters rewarding newer programs and setting records along the way.
Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay led the night, winning 14 awards and setting a record for the most Emmys won by a comedy series. The show surpassed the 12-award mark set by The Studio in 2025 and did so after only seven episodes had aired during the eligibility period.
The result continues a recent pattern in the comedy category, where voters have increasingly rewarded shows that are new to the top prize rather than returning repeatedly to established winners.
The Bear won 10 Emmys in 2023 and raised that total to 11 the following year. The Studio then surpassed it with 12 wins in 2025. Widow’s Bay has now pushed the record to 14.
Its performance was particularly notable because the series debuted April 29, leaving its final three episodes outside the May 31 eligibility cutoff. Despite that limited window, the show received 19 nominations and emerged as the dominant comedy winner.
Hacks, which entered the ceremony with a record 24 nominations for its fifth and final season, won two awards: editing and a performance prize for Jean Smart.
The results reflect a broader shift in the comedy category. Since 2018, only Ted Lasso has won Outstanding Comedy Series in consecutive years. Recent winners have included The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Fleabag, Schitt’s Creek, The Bear, Hacks, The Studio and now Widow’s Bay, with voters repeatedly elevating programs that had not previously won the category.
The drama awards also featured a mix of continuity and newcomers. The Pitt won Outstanding Drama Series for a second consecutive year, while first-season series Pluribus collected six awards, including wins for Vince Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn. Tom Pelphrey won for Task, while Allison Janney earned The Diplomat its first Emmy.
