Kenyans who had registered for the Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) can now change the housing unit they previously selected and get a new unit, Boma Yangu has announced.
The clarification followed mounting questions from concerned Kenyans who sought the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Planning's explanation on whether the change was possible.
According to the State Department of Housing and Urban Planning, Kenyans who previously registered for a particular unit under the programme can now change the unit if they so wish.
For instance, when you first applied for a studio unit, and you now feel you need to upgrade to a one-bedroom or three-bedroom, you can follow simple steps on the Boma Yangu website to make the changes.
"It is possible to change your preferred unit. Simply log in to your Boma Yangu portal, go to "Preferred House", select your previously chosen unit, click "View", then "Remove". Once removed, browse the available units, select your preferred unit as your new preferred unit," The State Department said.
Similarly, if an applicant first registered for a three-bedroom house, for instance and would like to downsize to a one-bedroom or a studio, the same is also possible through the same process.
At the same time, you can change the location of your preferred unit. For instance, if you first applied in Nairobi, let's say Southlands affordable units, and you would like to relocate to another town, like the Makasembo units in Kisumu, you can also make the changes through the website.
How to Change a Preferred Housing Unit
Applicants are first required to log into their Boma Yangu Portal and navigate through the "Preffered House" section.
Click "View", then select "Remove" to remove the existing preference.
Browse the available housing units.
Select another unit and set it as your new preferred house.
The move now gives applicants the liberty to change units and locations at will as new housing projects launch across various counties and as their financial or family circumstances evolve over time.
It, however, remains unclear whether one can change these units after allocation or during the registration and saving process.
For one to be allocated a unit under the housing programme, they must pay at least five per cent of the total cost of the unit as a deposit , with the remaining amount paid in monthly installments.
Those who can pay the whole amount at once can also make the payment and automatically become a homeowner without the monthly payments.
