Kirinyaga Woman Representative Njeri Maina has returned to music with a reggae love song titled Hit and Run, featuring a senator and an MCA, using humour to explore relationships, romantic intentions, and the challenges of commitment.
Released Thursday, October 22, 2026, the song cautions lovers against partners who pursue relationships for personal gain without intending to commit.
The song encourages people to recognise warning signs early and walk away from relationships in which one partner enjoys the benefits of romance without accepting the responsibilities that come with it.
Music Video Features Resort and Beach Scenes
The music video was filmed at a resort and along the beach, using playful scenes to illustrate the song’s central message.
In one scene, Maina rides a quad bike as a man, a potential suitor, pursues her, seemingly trying to win her affection.
The chase brings the song’s title to life, presenting romance as a pursuit where one person may care more about what they stand to gain than about building a lasting relationship.
Through its lyrics and visuals, Hit and Run highlights the importance of understanding a partner’s intentions before becoming emotionally invested. The song uses humour and relatable relationship experiences to address situations in which one person seeks the benefits of a relationship without being willing to commit.
The production also features Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango and MCA David Mathenge, who are close associates of the woman representative.
Murango plays the role of a wealthy man, while Mathenge appears as a watchman. Their roles introduce humour and local political familiarity into the music video, bringing together entertainment and public figures known for their political responsibilities in Kirinyaga.
The appearances also add an unexpected element to Maina’s latest release, with the two leaders taking on acting roles in a production centred on love and relationships.
Njeri Maina Returns to Music After University Pursuit
Njeri Maina, a trained lawyer known for her human rights advocacy, previously pursued music at university under the stage name Carola Jayne with Grandpa Records. She has also said she sold second-hand clothes, or mitumba, while at university to support herself.
“In retrospect, I had sold mtush in campus because I always wanted to have a little cash on the side for myself. Back in the day, the online market was booming. It was a new thing and therefore an opportunity to exploit. Being in campus at the time, I’d wake up and be at Gikosh by 6 am, right in time for selection of the ‘camera’ mtush,” Njeri Maina shared earlier.
She said she intended to revive her music career, and the release of Hit and Run marks a return to that interest.
Njeri Maina was born and raised in Kibingoti village, Kiine, Ndia Constituency, Kirinyaga County. She attended Kiangoma Primary School before joining Kabare Girls High School.
She later joined the University of Nairobi, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws degree in 2016. She then completed a postgraduate diploma in law at the Kenya School of Law and was admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
In September 2025, she joined Harvard Law School to pursue a master’s degree, fulfilling an ambition she had shared with her late father.
Legal career and Political career
Her legal career began in 2013, when she joined Amandi and Associates Advocates as a legal researcher and intern. She later worked at Mathenge Wambugu & Co. Advocates, where she rose to head of litigation.
Njeri Maina founded and serves as managing partner of Njeri Maina Law Advocates. She has also undertaken pro bono work, including representing young people arrested during the 2024–25 Gen Z and Saba Saba protests.
In the 2022 General Election, she was elected Kirinyaga County Woman Representative on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
She won with 175,001 votes, about 74.3% of the vote, becoming one of the youngest MPs in the 13th Parliament at about 28 or 29 years old.
In Parliament, she has positioned herself as a voice for young people and has been associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s political camp.
