President Ruto has called out Former President Uhuru Kenyatta for allegedly sponsoring Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other United Opposition leaders.
Speaking in Eldoret City, Uasin Gishu County, during a public forum with residents on Thursday, August 13, Ruto appeared to refer to Uhuru as the sponsor behind the opposition leaders.
The President then criticised the former Head of State over his record in government, citing affordable housing, Universal Health Coverage and the education of children.
“I want to ask you. When you look at those people,their sponsor, didn’t he fail on the issue of affordable housing? Didn’t he fail on Universal Health Coverage? Didn’t he fail on educating our children?” Ruto said.
He went on to accuse Uhuru of organising political proxies to challenge him in Eldoret and other parts of the country.
“Now he has gone to organise his proxies, sending people here to come and compete with me,” the President said.
Ruto said he was prepared to face the leaders politically and expressed confidence that he would defeat them.
“I will defeat these people early in the morning,” he said.
Sifuna Denies Uhuru Was Funding Linda Mwananchi
Ruto’s remarks come days after Sifuna denied claims that former President Uhuru Kenyatta was financing the Linda Mwananchi movement or offering it political strategy.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s The Explainer on July 28, Sifuna said the movement was relying on public support rather than financial backing from Uhuru.
“No, he’s not,” Sifuna said when asked whether the former president was funding the movement.
Linda Mwananchi has since launched an M-Pesa Paybill to allow supporters to contribute towards activities such as rallies, logistics and security.
Sifuna also confirmed that he remains in contact with Uhuru, explaining that he speaks to the former president because of his role as Azimio party leader. “He does not provide financial assistance, maybe just encouraging us,” Sifuna said.
The senator also rejected claims that Uhuru had offered strategic guidance to the movement, responding: “No. None at all.”
According to Sifuna, Uhuru has repeatedly spoken publicly about the need for young people to enter politics and take up leadership positions.
He said some young Kenyans had responded to that message by seeking elective positions ranging from Members of County Assembly to Members of Parliament, senators, and governors.
Ruto Allies Accuse Uhuru of Funding Sifuna and Opposition Activities
The latest allegations echo claims previously made by leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration, who have accused Uhuru Kenyatta of financially supporting opposition activities and the Linda Mwananchi faction.
During a UDA-ODM broad-based rally at Malava Primary School grounds in Kakamega County, ODM Director of Elections Junet Mohamed accused the retired president of playing a role in the internal divisions within ODM following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Mohamed alleged that Uhuru was funding the Edwin Sifuna-led Linda Mwananchi faction after it broke away from the mainstream ODM and aligned itself with the United Opposition led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The Suna East MP further claimed that the alleged funding was intended to strengthen opposition campaigns and weaken Ruto’s political support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Other ODM leaders, including Deputy Party Leader Wycliffe Oparanya, also called on Uhuru to stop what they described as efforts to undermine Ruto’s bid for a second term.
The leaders, who were speaking at the UDA-ODM rally, pledged their support for Ruto’s re-election while seeking political concessions, including the Deputy President’s position.
