The government is stepping up efforts to promote rural industrialisation, with the Nasewa Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Busia County expected to create new opportunities for investment, jobs and enterprise.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the development is part of the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to take industrialisation closer to rural communities.

According to Omollo, the Nasewa EPZ is being developed as an industrial hub that will attract manufacturing, processing and value-addition activities to the county.

The facility comprises four warehouses, an administrative block, a secure perimeter and a reliable water supply, providing infrastructure for businesses seeking to establish or expand their operations.

Omollo said completion of the project is expected to generate both direct and indirect employment opportunities while opening up new markets for local artisans, traders, transporters and service providers.

The development is also expected to create opportunities for enterprises operating within and around the industrial hub by increasing demand for goods and services.

The project is being implemented in coordination with the State Department for Interior and National Administration, with the department supporting security, community engagement and inter-agency cooperation.

Omollo said the initiative reflects the government’s broader push to spread industrial and economic opportunities beyond major urban centres and create more avenues for communities to participate in economic activity.

The Nasewa EPZ is therefore expected to serve as a platform for attracting investment to Busia while linking industrial activity with local enterprises and employment opportunities.
