Search and rescue operations are continuing off Gabon's southern coast for four people missing after an offshore drilling rig sank over the weekend, with one Indian national confirmed dead and 110 others rescued.

Gabonese naval authorities said the Indian worker died after suffering a head injury, according to accounts collected from survivors. According to authorities, the three other missing workers are Gabonese nationals, while the fourth is Croatian.

The Prospector 5 rig sank off Mayumba on Saturday, October 24, while 115 people were aboard. Borr Drilling, the company operating the rig, initially reported five people unaccounted for before the death of the Indian worker was reported.

In an update issued on Monday, Borr Drilling said extensive search and rescue operations involving marine and air teams were continuing to locate those still missing.

“Of the 115 personnel on board, 110 are safe and accounted for. Search and rescue operations are ongoing for the five individuals who remain unaccounted for,” the company said in its initial update.

“Borr Drilling’s onshore emergency response team continues to work with local authorities and our customer, to respond to the incident, support those affected and to continue to search for missing personnel. Extensive marine and air search and rescue operations remain ongoing.”

Meanwhile, Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema on Tuesday visited Port-Gentil to meet survivors and families affected by the incident.

According to Nguema’s office, the head of state also visited six injured survivors receiving hospital treatment, some of whom had suffered fractures and trauma. The survivors, Nguema’s office said, would receive psychological support in addition to medical care.

“Beyond this presence with the survivors and families, the President of the Republic reaffirmed that the priority remains the search for missing persons, the support of grieving families and the care of survivors and the injured who will benefit from psychological support,” Nguema’s office said in a statement.
