Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Democracy for the Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri on October 26, 2026.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on Monday, MP Koech argued that the visit put the former Vice President in a weaker bargaining position within the opposition.
Koech believes that Kalonzo, given his long political experience and seniority, should have been given the respect of a leader by having Gachagua visit him instead.
“He's been in politics longer than him, in fact, the only position that Kalonzo has not occupied in the public space is the presidency,” Koech said.
Koech argued that political negotiations, particularly those involving presidential ambitions and arrangements of sharing of power, are often shaped by the strength of the individuals involved.
He suggested that Kalonzo's decision to travel to Gachagua's residence, accompanied by a delegation, created the impression that he was approaching Gachagua from a weaker position in the current opposition arrangements.
"In the perspective of when you sit in the space of diplomacy and you realise what happens, especially when you are negotiating for power, the weaker one will look for the stronger one," Koech said.
“For him to have gone to Wamunyoro, somehow, if you look at it in bargaining terms of diplomacy, he went as a weaker person."
The MP also expressed sympathy for Kalonzo over his participation in the launch of the Linda Mwananchi movement, arguing that his appearance was humiliating for a long-serving politician.
He instead said that Kalonzo is better placed to join hands with President William Ruto to secure better political capital in the 2027 General Election.
“Because it is wrong for a senior person like Kalonzo to still lead the Kamba community, to still lead his supporters in the country to the opposition. He's been there for long enough,” he said.
He argued that Kalonzo had remained in opposition politics for a long period despite his experience in government, adding that his political influence and support base were valuable to any national political arrangement.
