Ndindi Nyoro condemns the withdrawal of George Natembeya’s security detail, urging the government to respect political differences and stop using security protection to intimidate leaders with divergent views.

People's Party of Kenya (PPK) leader Ndindi Nyoro has challenged the government over the withdrawal of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya’s security detail, warning against using state security to intimidate leaders who hold divergent political views.

Nyoro said political differences should not be a reason to deny elected leaders their security protection, citing Natembeya and Siaya Governor James Orengo as examples of leaders whose differing political positions should be respected.

“Ukiona watu wako na maoni tofauti, kama vile tunaona Bwana Orengo, Bwana Natembeya, tusikuje tunawaondolea security kwa sababu wako mrengo tofauti,” he said.

The former Kiharu MP argued that security arrangements for elected leaders should not be weaponised against those who express opinions that differ from those of the government.

“Tusitumie kama mambo ya security kuagamiza viongozi wengine wenye wako na maoni tofauti,” Nyoro said.

He called for tolerance and mutual respect among political leaders, insisting that those already holding public office should be allowed to perform their duties while those seeking elective positions should be free to pursue their ambitions.

“Ndiyo tuheshimiane wote, kila mtu atoe maoni yake. Yule amekalia kiti afanye kazi yake, yule anatafuta apewe nafasi ya kuitafuta kwa sababu Kenya ni demokrasia,” he said.

Nyoro’s remarks come amid renewed controversy over the withdrawal of Natembeya’s security detail, a decision the governor has questioned.

The latest withdrawal was reported on October 14, 2026, hours after President William Ruto toured Trans Nzoia County.

Natembeya said the officers had been withdrawn without prior communication and called on Inspector-General of Police Douglas Kanja to explain the decision.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen defended the move, accusing the governor of associating with individuals he described as goons and alleging plans for violence.

The latest incident is not the first time Natembeya has faced the withdrawal of his security detail. On November 26, 2025, officers guarding the governor and his Kitale residence were recalled without prior notice.

The move came days after Natembeya’s convoy was attacked during a political rally in Chwele, Bungoma County, on November 22, 2025.

In December 2025, the High Court issued interim orders stopping changes to the security details of Natembeya and Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale.
