Nominated Senator Crystal Asige joins Winnie Odinga and Jalang’o in Nairobi Senate race
Nominated Senator Crystal Asige cites her record of developing seven Bills and championing disability rights as she joins Winnie Odinga, Jalang’o and other aspirants in the race for Nairobi’s Senate seat in 2027.
Nominated Senator Crystal Asige has declared her intention to contest the Nairobi senatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, citing her legislative record and advocacy for persons with disabilities as she seeks an elective mandate to represent the capital’s residents.
Speaking on Sunday, Asige said she had developed seven Bills aimed at protecting and supporting citizens, arguing that her experience in the Senate had prepared her to serve Nairobi residents in an elected capacity.
She highlighted the Persons with Disabilities Act among her legislative initiatives, saying she had dedicated herself to addressing challenges affecting Nairobi residents and Kenyans more broadly.
“Asige anasija kama Senator wa Nairobi 2027,” she declared, signalling her intention to transition from her current nominated position to an elective seat.
Asige also appealed to voters to give her an opportunity to continue serving, saying her vision extended beyond Nairobi to address the needs of families and the country as a whole.
Her declaration adds to the growing list of aspirants eyeing the Nairobi senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections, with the contest gaining momentum amid speculation over incumbent Senator Edwin Sifuna’s ambitions for higher office.

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member Winnie Odinga declared her bid on October 15 at Migwena Cultural Grounds during a commemoration marking the first anniversary of her father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death.
Winnie said she saw an opportunity to contest the seat as Sifuna pursued higher office, adding that she was ready to enter the race.
"Let it not be a rumour that as Edwin Sifuna searches for higher offices, I see there is some space in Nairobi, and that is why I have decided I will vie for Senator of Nairobi County," Winnie said.
Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has also maintained his interest in the seat. Reacting to Winnie’s announcement, he said her entry would make the contest more competitive and vowed to remain in the race.
"Winnie’s entry into the race makes it even more exciting, competitive and serious because the other people who announced their bid were not as serious," he said.
Musician and businessman KRG The Don has also expressed interest in the Nairobi senatorial seat, indicating that he intends to contest on the National Economic Development Party ticket associated with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
