Siaya Senator and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Oburu Oginga has questioned former President Uhuru Kenyatta over his decision to facilitate the transfer of power to President William Ruto despite claiming that the late Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election.
In a statement on September 24, Oburu said Uhuru’s recent remarks confirmed what ODM maintained at the time but questioned why the former President raised the issue four years after the election.
He asked why Uhuru did not make the revelation when the alleged electoral injustice occurred and why his government facilitated the transfer of power to Ruto if he believed Odinga had won.
“On Tuesday, 22nd September 2026, we heard former President Uhuru Kenyatta make statements regarding the outcome of the 2022 presidential election, in which he stated that our departed Party Leader, the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, won that election,” Oburu said.
“Why is this revelation important now, four years later, and not when the said electoral injustice occurred?”
Oburu Questions Uhuru’s Role in Ruto’s 2022 Power Handover
The ODM party leader further questioned what Uhuru expected Kenyans to do with the information at this point.
Oburu said the 2022 election remained a sensitive issue within ODM and among Odinga supporters, arguing that elections reflect the will of the people and the legitimacy of government.
The ODM leader also recalled the political sacrifices the party made during its relationship with Uhuru following the 2018 Handshake.
According to Oburu, ODM lowered its political ambitions in the interest of national unity and stability and did not demand Cabinet or administrative positions in Uhuru’s government despite its political strength.
He said the party made further concessions ahead of the 2022 election, including giving up its pursuit of important elective positions such as the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in support of its presidential candidate and the broader coalition arrangement.
Oburu said ODM had made those compromises in good faith and argued that Uhuru now owed Kenyans an explanation after reopening the debate over the 2022 election.
He also cautioned against reducing the 2022 election and Odinga’s political sacrifices to what he described as contemporary vote-winning propaganda.
“The 2022 election and the sacrifices of our departed Party Leader must not be reduced to material for contemporary vote-winning propaganda. Having reopened this matter, President Kenyatta should tell the country the whole story,” Oburu said.
What Did Uhuru Say?
On September 22, 2026, Former President Uhuru Kenyatta cast doubt for the first time on the legitimacy of President William Ruto’s 2022 General Election victory, claiming he knows the late Raila Odinga won.
Speaking during a Jubilee Party National Executive Committee meeting in Nairobi, Uhuru said he remained convinced that Odinga had won the election, adding that he and his allies had done everything possible to support his presidential bid.
The former President also questioned how Azimio could have won most Members of Parliament, Senators and Governors while losing the presidential contest.
“We did everything to help him become President of Kenya, and to date I know he won that election. Those who want to know the truth know the truth. How can you say you won yet we have most Members of Parliament, Senators, and Governors? How could you say we lost? We know how things went down,” he said.
He further warned political leaders against using what he described as bad politics and urged parties preparing for the 2027 General Election to focus on their manifestos rather than political divisions.
