The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal has lifted the suspension on the registration of the Ukombozi Alliance, allowing the process to proceed after it was halted over a dispute concerning the party’s name.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 29, by the SKM Presidential Secretariat, the tribunal was said to have discharged its earlier orders suspending the registration process.
“The Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), sitting today, Thursday, October 29, 2026, has discharged its earlier orders suspending the registration process of The Ukombozi Alliance (TUA),” the statement read.
The case, filed as PPDT/E007/2026, involves Allan Jayuga Akivaga, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties and the Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya.
The ruling allows the Registrar of Political Parties to proceed with the registration in accordance with the law.
“The Registrar of Political Parties is accordingly at liberty to proceed with and conclude the registration of The Ukombozi Alliance in accordance with the Political Parties Act and all other applicable laws,” the statement added.
The decision follows interim orders issued on October 13, when the tribunal blocked the registration and gazettement of the proposed party name pending a challenge by Akivaga.
The tribunal’s chair, Innocent Muganda, had certified the application as urgent and restrained the registrar, its officers and agents from approving, registering, gazetting or taking further administrative steps towards registering Wiper under the disputed name.
The challenge centred on the reservation of the name on July 20, 2026.
The latest decision removes the restrictions that had stalled the process. However, the statement did not indicate whether the underlying dispute over the name had been finally determined.
Rebranding ahead of 2027 polls
The Ukombozi Alliance is the proposed new identity of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition Party, led by Kalonzo Musyoka.
Coalition members agreed to the rebranding on September 21 as part of preparations for the 2027 General Election.
The change was presented as a reorganisation of the existing coalition rather than the formation of an entirely new political grouping.
Martha Karua serves as deputy coalition leader, while Suba South MP Caroli Omondi is the secretary-general.
The registration dispute emerged as the coalition pursued the proposed name change, raising questions over whether the registrar could proceed while the challenge remained before the tribunal.
With the suspension lifted, the registrar can now continue the process, although the completion of registration remains subject to applicable legal and administrative requirements.
