Hamad International Airport is prioritizing operational resilience, passenger processing and runway rehabilitation following the completion of its latest terminal expansion. The airport handled 54.3 million passengers in 2025, a 3% increase from 2024, while its annual passenger capacity now exceeds 65 million. In 2026, its focus has shifted from delivering Concourses D and E to maintaining safety, efficiency and service quality as travel demand evolves.

Hamad International Airport Expansion Moves into Operational Optimisation

The airport completed its major expansion milestone in March 2025 with the opening of Concourses D and E. The development increased the terminal area by 14% to 845,000 square metres and added 17 aircraft contact gates, bringing the total to 62. These facilities are now part of the airport’s operating infrastructure, supporting passenger transfers and reducing reliance on remote stands and bus transfers.

Current performance figures show that the expanded airport continues to handle substantial traffic. During 2025, it recorded 282,975 aircraft movements and 2.59 million tonnes of cargo. Passenger satisfaction remained at 98%, according to the airport’s annual performance update reported by Airports Council International.

Hamad International Airport Expansion Shifts to Runway Works

The next significant infrastructure priority is the phased rehabilitation of the eastern runway. The airport identified these works as a 2026 priority to maintain compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization safety standards while preserving operational continuity. The phased approach is intended to allow the airport to continue serving airlines and passengers during the works.

The airport is also continuing to improve passenger processing and accessibility. In September 2026, officials highlighted the use of biometric Fast Pass technology across more than 700 touchpoints, alongside additional staffing and check-in facilities to manage busy periods. These measures support operational recovery and help the airport accommodate fluctuating passenger demand.

Hamad International Airport Expansion Supports Qatar’s Infrastructure Strategy

The airport’s current priorities demonstrate how major infrastructure projects move from construction into asset management, maintenance and operational optimisation. Rather than announcing another completed terminal expansion, the latest developments centre on runway safety, passenger flow and reliability across existing facilities.

Qatar is also pursuing specialised infrastructure outside the aviation sector. The proposed US military Space Campus at Al Udeid Air Base involves procurement planning for secure facilities and supporting infrastructure. This separate project illustrates the range of major infrastructure developments underway in Qatar.

Features and amenities of the Hamad International Airport

The airport features world-class services ranging from endless F&B options that comprise more than 65 retail as well as dining outlets, spread across its three levels. As a result of the expansion, the Food and Beverage options will include well over 20 restaurants as well as cafes. The outlets will offer delicious global and local cuisines for the ultimate and most elegant dining experience.

As a part of the overall expansion, the project also launched the second airport hotel within its transfer area. The Oryx Garden Hotel’s location is in the North plaza and offers rooms that range from twin to king-size. Additionally, the 100-room hotel diligently places focus on sustainability, thus, the suites are moments away from the boarding gates.

Furthermore, the expansion included the upgrading of the facilities, therefore creating a smoother and more ideal traveling experience and destination for passengers.
