Angus Alexander Patrick Atkinson, known as Gus Atkinson, is an English professional cricketer born on 19 January 1998 in Chelsea, London.

He is a right-arm fast-medium bowler and right-handed batsman who plays for Surrey in domestic cricket and represents England across formats.

Educated at Northcote Lodge preparatory school in Wandsworth and Bradfield College in Berkshire, Atkinson developed his skills through Surrey’s age-group system.

His family background includes sporting heritage, with his great-great-grandfather Sir Henry Norris having been involved with Arsenal Football Club.

Atkinson’s mother, Caroline, died in a car accident in December 2020, an event that profoundly affected him but also strengthened his resolve to succeed in cricket.

    Siblings

    Gus is the middle child in his family and has two siblings.

    His older sister is Isobel Atkinson, often known as Izzie, who holds a Master of Arts degree in Fashion Journalism from the University of the Arts London and has worked as a freelance fashion assistant.

    His younger brother is Barnaby Atkinson.

    The siblings share a close bond, with the family home in Wandsworth remaining a place where they have lived together.

    Career

    Atkinson signed a professional contract with Surrey after strong performances for the second team and made his first-class debut in 2020, dismissing Alastair Cook in the process.

    He progressed through domestic competitions, including the County Championship, where he contributed to Surrey’s 2022 title win, and white-ball formats such as the T20 Blast and The Hundred, playing for Southern Brave and later Oval Invincibles.

    International recognition came in 2023 with his T20I debut against New Zealand, in which he took 4 for 20, followed by his ODI debut later that series.

    His Test debut arrived in July 2024 against West Indies at Lord’s, where he claimed 12 wickets in the match for figures of 12 for 106, the best by an England debutant in more than a century.

    Subsequent performances included a maiden Test century of 118 against Sri Lanka at Lord’s, where he also took five wickets in an innings, and a hat-trick in a Test against New Zealand.

    Accolades

    On his T20I debut Atkinson recorded the best bowling figures by an England bowler in that format at the time.

    His Test debut produced the best match figures by an England player on debut since 1890.

    At Lord’s he became one of a select few to achieve a five-wicket haul, a ten-wicket match haul, and a century at the ground, and the first England player since Ian Botham in 1984 to score a hundred and take five wickets in the same Test.

    He was named England Player of the Year at the 2024 Cricket Writers’ Club Awards and selected as one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year for 2025.

    Domestic awards include Most Improved Player honours with Surrey.
