Past action between Kenyan Legends and Ugandan Legends/HANDOUT
Kenya Rugby Legends will face their South African counterparts in a two-leg SportPesa Legends Cup series next year, marking the competition’s expansion beyond East Africa for the first time.
The series, announced on Thursday, will begin in Nairobi on May 8, 2027, before the return leg in Cape Town on July 4, 2027.
Kenya Rugby Legends, comprising former Kenyan international players, will take on South Africa Rugby Legends, whose squad is expected to feature former internationals, including Rugby World Cup winners and World Rugby Hall of Famers.
Both teams’ squads will be announced closer to the matches, with fans expected to see familiar faces from previous generations of international rugby.
Kenya Rugby Legends captain Eddie Omondi welcomed the development, describing the series as an important step in expanding the reach of veterans’ rugby across the region.
“Veterans rugby has a passionate global following, and this series is a big step in growing that following in East and Southern Africa,” Omondi said.
“Bringing South Africa Rugby Legends to Nairobi, and then taking our side to Cape Town, gives fans the chance to see legends of the game up close and be part of something bigger.”
Since its launch in 2023, the SportPesa Legends Cup has been contested between Kenya and Uganda, with Kenya winning all four editions.
The 2026 series proved to be the most competitive yet, with Uganda recording their first-ever victory over Kenya in the competition, winning 16-15 in Mombasa.
Kenya, however, bounced back in the return leg in Kampala, securing a 17-10 victory to retain the title with a 32-26 aggregate win.
The introduction of South Africa Rugby Legends represents a significant step in the competition’s growth, offering Kenyan rugby fans an opportunity to watch former stars from one of the sport’s most successful nations.
Further details, including the Nairobi venue, ticketing arrangements and match-day activities, will be announced in the coming months.
The SportPesa Legends Cup brings together former players to celebrate rugby’s heritage, connect generations of fans and use sport to support community development and social impact.
The 2027 series will provide a new international platform for former Kenyan and South African internationals to renew rivalries while strengthening rugby ties between East and Southern Africa.
