Xiaomi has launched the Redmi Note 17 Series in the Kenyan market. Among the smartphones in the series is Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G, which packs a 10,000mAh battery, 100W charging and up to six years of security updates.

The new lineup includes the Redmi Note 17, Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G and Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G, with Xiaomi positioning the devices around durability, long battery life and longer software support.

The launch also marks a milestone for the Redmi Note family, which has now surpassed 500 million shipments globally.

For the Kenyan market, the new series starts at KSh29,999, while the top-end Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G starts at KSh59,999.

Redmi goes big on battery life

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G comes with a 10,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, Xiaomi’s largest smartphone battery to date. It supports 100W HyperCharge and 27W reverse charging.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G has an 8,340mAh battery with 67W HyperCharge, while the standard Redmi Note 17 packs a 7,700mAh battery with 45W charging.

Xiaomi says the Pro Max can deliver up to three days of battery life on a single charge, while 20 minutes of charging can provide enough power for a full day of use.

The batteries are also designed for long-term use. Xiaomi says they can retain at least 80% of their original capacity after 1,600 charge cycles, equivalent to around six years of typical use.

Built to take more punishment

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G and Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G feature what Xiaomi calls REDMI Titan Structure, combining reinforced internal components with stronger drop and water resistance.

Both Pro models carry IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings and have passed a two-metre, 72-hour water-resistance test.

They also feature Underwater Mode, while Wet Touch Technology 2.0 is designed to keep the screen responsive when it detects water, oil, foam or sweat.

For accidental drops, the Pro models have been tested to withstand falls of up to three metres onto granite surfaces, with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 providing additional protection against scratches and everyday impacts.

The two Pro models are also the first smartphones to receive TÜV SÜD 5-star Titan Quality Certification, covering drop resistance, water resistance and battery performance.

Bigger, brighter displays

The Pro models feature 6.83-inch AMOLED displays with 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 3,500 nits.

The displays also support 12-bit colour depth, a 3200Hz instantaneous touch sampling rate and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

The standard Redmi Note 17 takes a slightly different approach with a larger 6.99-inch FHD+ AMOLED display, a 120Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of 1,800 nits.

That makes the standard model particularly suited to users who spend a lot of time streaming video, browsing or gaming on their phones.

AI is becoming a bigger part of Redmi

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G gets Xiaomi HyperAI, bringing tools such as AI Writing, AI Interpreter, AI Dynamic Wallpapers, AI Speech Recognition and AI Creativity Assistant.

The Pro models also feature AI-powered tools including AI Glare Removal, AI Image Enhancement, AI Beautify, AI Erase Pro and AI Image Expansion.

Across the entire series, users get access to Google Gemini and Circle to Search, bringing AI-powered search and assistance to the devices.

For photography, the AI tools are designed to make editing easier, from removing unwanted objects and glare to enhancing images.

Cameras

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G features a 50MP main camera with OIS, an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 32MP front camera.

The Pro 5G also has a 50MP OIS main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 16MP selfie camera.

The Pro Max supports 4K video recording at 30fps, alongside Professional Video mode, Live Moment and dual-video recording.

Xiaomi is also positioning the phones for creators, with the AI editing tools providing additional ways to enhance images after they have been captured.

The standard Redmi Note 17 comes with a 50MP main camera and a 16MP front camera.

Performance and software

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 mobile platform, paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.1 storage on the higher-capacity configurations.

It is available with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G uses the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 platform, with up to 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, while the standard Redmi Note 17 uses the Snapdragon 6s 4G Gen 2 platform.

All three models run Xiaomi HyperOS 3.

One of the more significant changes, however, is the length of software support. Xiaomi is promising up to six years of security updates across the lineup, while selected models also get up to six years of battery health.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G is also promised a six-year like-new software experience, according to Xiaomi.

The Redmi Note 17 starts at KSh29,999 and comes in Celestial Purple, Sky Teal and Black.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G starts at KSh46,999 and is available in Sky Blue, Satin Orange, Purple and Black.

The flagship Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G starts at KSh59,999 and comes in Cloud Blush, Green, Purple and Black.

Launch offers

Xiaomi Kenya is offering additional incentives on purchases made during the launch period, which runs until October 10.

Every Redmi Note 17 Series purchase comes with a 24+1-month warranty, a two-year screen protection plan and a three-year battery warranty.

Customers buying the Redmi Note 17 or Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G will also receive a Xiaomi Lamp valued at KSh3,700, while buyers of the Redmi Note 17 Pro Max 5G get a Xiaomi Toaster valued at KSh7,000.

Customers can also purchase the Redmi Note 17 and Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G through OnFon instalment financing, with a 10% deposit from KSh3,300 and daily payments starting at KSh160 during October.

Those buying the phones at a Safaricom Shop will receive an additional 15GB of free data.
