Journalists decry impunity over attacks and rights violations
Description (show more)
Journalists are urged to document evidence whenever they are assaulted, arrested, or harassed in the line of duty. On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, media workers decried glaring gaps in follow-up after their rights were infringed. Thirteen complaints involving 17 journalists have been filed, with four cases forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, one withdrawn, three stalled due to non-cooperation, and two blocked by police reluctance. The remaining cases are still under investigation. Speaking in Nairobi during the event, journalists said the capital accounts for the most violations, with seven cases, followed by Kajiado and other counties. They warned that the lack of accountability emboldens perpetrators and leaves the profession exposed.
