PARADISE UNDER SIEGE | "Wealth, Power, and the Railway of Disruption in Karen, Nairobi"
Description (show more)
Residents of Karen in Nairobi County are opposing the proposed Sh8.7 billion Riruta-Ngong commuter railway project. The Karen Langata District Association (KLDA) has expressed concerns, citing potential harm to property values and the environment in the area. This 12.5-kilometer railway, commissioned by President William Ruto in December 2023, is planned to pass through Riruta, Karen, Bulbul, and Ngong. In response, Karen residents are suggesting an alternative route along the edge of Kibiku Forest, which they believe could be shorter and more cost-effective. They have also proposed that, instead of building the railway, the government could widen the existing Karen-Ngong road to help alleviate traffic issues in the area at a cost of Sh3 billion, a significantly lower investment than the planned railway.
