The Day Moi Publicly Humiliated His Vice President, George Saitoti
Description (show more)
In August 2002, inside Nairobi's Kasarani Sports Complex, Kenya witnessed one of the most dramatic moments in its political history. For years, Professor George Saitoti had loyally served as President Daniel arap Moi's Vice President and was widely seen as one of the frontrunners to succeed him. But during the KANU National Delegates Conference, Moi shocked the nation by endorsing a relatively inexperienced Uhuru Kenyatta as his preferred successor. What followed was a political earthquake. As thousands of delegates watched, Saitoti found himself sidelined in a succession battle that would change the course of Kenyan politics forever. The moment exposed deep divisions within KANU, triggered a rebellion among senior party figures, and ultimately contributed to the end of KANU's nearly 40-year grip on power. In this documentary, we revisit the famous Kasarani conference, examine the relationship between Moi and Saitoti, and explore how one decision reshaped Kenya's political landscape. Was this a calculated political move by Moi? Or was it the moment George Saitoti's presidential ambitions came crashing down?
