Anita Among is a Ugandan accountant, lawyer, and politician who served as the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda from March 2022 until 2026.
Among represents the Bukedea District Women Constituency in Parliament and is a member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Education Background
Anita Among rose from humble beginnings in a large rural family of more than 48 children, most of them girls. She has often shared her upbringing while advocating for girl-child education, reflecting on the challenges she faced in her early days.
“My father wanted me to get married, so I decided to run away from home to become a house girl in people’s homes,” Among had stated.
She attended local primary and secondary schools in Bukedea, overcoming early pressure for child marriage.
Anita Among later pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Business Administration in 2005 and a Master of Business Administration in 2008 from Makerere University.

Anita Among worked at Centenary Bank from 1998 to 2006, rising from cashier to branch manager, and she also lectured in accounting at the university level.
She entered politics in 2016 as the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament. Initially associated with the FDC, an opposition party, she later joined the ruling NRM party.

On May 19, Anita Among faced a corruption probe involving allegations of illicit enrichment, money laundering, and possible breaches of the Leadership Code.
Security agencies reportedly raided her residences in Nakasero and Kigo on May 18, seizing luxury vehicles, including a Rolls‑Royce Cullinan, alongside other items.
Following a reported meeting with President Yoweri Museveni, she announced she would not seek re-election as Speaker.
“I wish to draw the attention of the public to the matters regarding the Speakership race. After wide consultations and deep introspection, and to maintain harmony and clarity in my beloved party, the NRM, I wish to categorically and unequivocally state that I will not be offering myself for the Speakership race of the 12th Parliament,” Among wrote.
Among has stated that the scrutiny is politically motivated, while pledging to cooperate with authorities.
